Your CAO Second Round Offers What if Questions Answered

Your CAO Second Round Offers What if Questions Answered

I got the points but still got no First Round Offer. Will I get an offer in the CAO Second Round?

If you did not meet Minimum Entry Requirements or Specific Entry Requirements, even if you got the points, for your Level 8 Course Choice you will still not be offered that course in Second Round Offers.

The only option that you have is to use the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS) to progress from a Level 6 or Level 7 course in a cognate or related area. Alternatively you can use the HELS to progress from a FETAC course, which is linked to the course of your choice, and reapply through the CAO next year or apply through the UCAS system for a place on a related/cognate course in the UK.

Repeating to meet Minimum Entry Requirements or Specific Entry Requirements is an option. Check out my recent article on repeating the Leaving Certificate before you make any firm decisions.

So what happens if I have accepted my First Offer but got a Second Round Offer that I would rather accept?

You can either

  1. Stick with the course that you were offered in the First Round. All you have to do in terms of your CAO courses is sit back and do nothing until you hear from the Admissions Office of the college you are going to or…
  2. You can choose to accept your Second Round Offer and you give up the place on the course that you were offered in the First Round.

So what if I received my First Choice on my Level 6/7 list but the Second or lower down course choice on my Level 8?

Even though each Level 8 and Level 6/7 courses are on the same CAO form they are essentially independent of one another. This means that acceptance of a Level 6/7 course does not in any way affect the possibility of you being offered a Level 8 course which you did not get offered in the First Round of CAO offers.

The opposite is also true this means that if you accepted a Level 8 course in Round One, you got an offer of a Level 6/7 Course in Round Two that you would prefer to do it is possible to accept that course.
